Renowned Jazz Musicians lead workshop with Poole High

On February the 11th Poole High’s Music Department in partnership with Soundstorm hosted a workshop with world renowned jazz musicians.

The Patrick Cornelius Quintet led a high energy, virtuoso workshop for year 11-13 music students.  The quintet, led by the USA saxophonist and composer features award winning guitarist Phil Robson, acclaimed bassist Michael Janisch, trombonist Nick Vayenas and drummer Andrew Bain – both of whom have worked with artists such as Michael Buble and Justin Bieber.  The workshop began with a spellbinding performance of Thelonious Monk’s ‘Straight, No Chaser’ followed by a workshop on Blues improvisation in which trumpeter Hannah Strong, clarinettist Liz Cabell, pianist Anna Silins, drummer Harley Richards, bassist Ned Ellis and Jed Brown on electric guitar received tuition in developing their improvisatory skills.  The quintet then performed works from Cornelius’ new album ‘While We’re Still Young,’ inspired by A.A. Milne’s classic poetry for children.  The latter part of the workshop consisted of an invaluable Q and A discussion covering subjects such as the music industry, rehearsal techniques and inspirational advice for our developing musicians.
