Far Flung Corners: linking SoundStorm with the Outer Hebrides

Date: 24th March
Location: Lighthouse, Poole

‘Far Flung Corners’ is an exciting finale concert of the project exploring the rich cultural diversity that has existed for generations in the British Isles, though musical exchanges linking Dorset with the Outer Hebrides.

It promises to be a fabulous concert featuring six Hebrides-based musicians including renowned composer/fiddlers, Anna-Wendy Stevenson and Simon Bradley, Dorset’s own highly acclaimed Alex Roberts, and SoundStorm’s Dan Somogyi. Expect wonderful traditional Scottish music played by hugely talented students from the Traditional Music Course, University of the Highlands and Islands, some new compositions by Anna Wendy and Alex Roberts, and some new joint collaborations, all with a backdrop of images from the  Western Islands and Dorset. It’s supported by the University of Highlands and Islands and Arts Council England, to whom we are very grateful. A recording will be released as part of a new CD in May.

The project has music education at it’s core. Alex and Dan have returned from the Outer Hebrides, working with eight schools up there, on the islands of North and South Uist, Benbecula and Barra, alongside Traditional Music students Mabel Duncan (voice/fiddle), Jordan Neil (guitar/pipes),  Tom Campbell-Payne (whistles, bodhran), Martin Gilligan (mandolin/banjo) and Stephen Drummond (accordion). Four of these Scottish musicians are coming to Bournemouth/Poole for the week commencing 21 March and will be visiting eight schools here, alongside Anna-Wendy, Simon and Alex. For over 800 English children in Bournemouth/Poole, the project offers the opportunity to experience fantastic traditional Scottish and contemporary English folk music of the highest quality. Students from St Lukes Primary School will be working with the musicians every day, with the aim of creating a brand new composition by the end of the week.

If any Bournemouth/Poole schools would like to link with Hebridean counterparts, that can also be arranged through this project. Contact daniel.somogyi@bournemouth.gov.uk
