In the summer of 2012, SoundStorm took a leading role in developing the celebration event on Bournemouth Beach to commemorate the arrival of the Olympic Torch. In partnership with Activate, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Music in Action, a special new ‘Olympic choir’ was created to perform onstage in front of the 15,000 members of the Bournemouth public, alongside artists such as Wretch 32.
Every school in Bournemouth was invited to nominate their best singer; 33 out of the 40 schools did just that. Two taster days and a week-long intensive residency followed and resulted in a new 10 minute piece. BSO Resonate Strings played Carl Jenkin’s Palladio, with special new vocal accompaniment by the choir. The choir themselves composed a brand new piece, Waves, which described the attractions of living in Bournemouth. The finale was a version of Elbow’s ‘One Day Like This’, with massed audience participation, including 500 members of local community choirs planted in the crowd.
The choir has continued, its next project being to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in May 2013.
