Young Carers Project 2020-22

Bath Philharmonia is one of two professional orchestras in south west England. SoundStorm has worked successfully with the orchestra’s education department (the Creative Learning Team) over many years, on a wide variety of projects and the partnership continues to blossom.

One of our most fruitful areas of partnership has been music activities offered to young carers, bringing together these young people with musicians and artists in creative residencies, to produce new music and art. These activities, as well as some brilliant music produced, give the young carers respite from their caring responsibilities, as well as the opportunity to make new friends and work alongside some amazing professional musicians.

Bath Philharmonia’s success and expertise in this field led to SoundStorm working with them on a grant application to Youth Music, with an ambition to develop more sustainable projects in this area. The bid was successful and began in late 2019. It extends across a 3 year period, finishing in 2022. Bath Philharmonia is the project lead with SoundStorm the lead music education hub partner.

Developing Skills

Bath Philharmonia will work closely with SoundStorm and 4 other music education hubs across the South West to develop the specialist skills required by music leaders to work with this diverse group of young people. Each Hub will fund 2 music leaders to train alongside Bath Phil and in each area, there will be 3 week-long mini projects with young carers, to compose and collaborate on new music. By the end of the programme, the ambition is that the newly trained music leaders will deliver the activities themselves across our region.

The project will significantly increase the number of young carers able to take part in music activities across the region. Bath Phil will then move on to work with new Hubs.

At the end of the project, it is hoped that we can share the lessons learned on a national stage, and roll out the model across the country, offering more young carers the opportunity to engage with and to make music.

Progress to Date

Initial training sessions for staff from each Hub took place in January 2020. However, the Covid19 pandemic forced the postponement of the first round of practical sessions which were due to take place in summer 2020. These have now been rescheduled to late 2020 whilst some other activities have now moved online. Fingers crossed, the face to face work should be resume in late 2020.

Keep checking back here for updates on the progress of the project or email Dan to find out more daniel.somogyi@bcpcouncil.gov.uk

The other music education hubs involved in the first round of training are Plymouth, Torbay and Somerset.
