Next stop… The Royal Albert Hall

In partnership with Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, 250 local students will play Music for Youth’s Proms this November.

Music for Youth’s programme highlight is without doubt their annual Proms every November at the Royal Albert Hall.  Led by Hub partners, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, our collaborative commission to celebrate the BSO’s 125th birthday, Symphony 125 was selected from a shortlist of 18 Nationwide applications and will be performed this November in one of the most prestigious venues in the world.

Throughout 2018 SoundStorm has been celebrating the BSO’s 125th anniversary year; as part of this, last September we commissioned composer James Redwood to write a celebratory suite of music for our ‘Take Off’ schools, our ensemble development programme which we initiated in 2015.

Symphony 125 premiered at the Lighthouse in May, with a performance that featured over 250 students accompanied by players from the orchestra, to a specially invited audience of almost 1000 KS1 students, many of whom had never been to a concert before. On November 5th, these young musicians will join 350 other students from the South west on the stage at the Royal Albert Hall to perform a special reprisal of Symphony 125.

The score was designed to be performed by musicians from absolute beginner to the professional, bringing together a huge number of musicians in one large ensemble. The music and lyrics were developed in partnership with students from Longfleet Primary, Canford Heath Junior, Jewell Academy, Bishop of Winchester Academy and Glenmoor and Winton Academies, whose ideas were incorporated into the final work. Joined on stage by students from Poole and Parkstone Grammar, we will also be welcoming students from Victoria Education Centre to this acclaimed event.

This will see the culmination of SoundStorm’s ‘Take Off’ ensemble development programme which began in 2015 – a partnership between the Hub and the BSO, with the simple ambition to support, develop or establish more in-school ensembles.

Led by BSO Associates Neil Valentine and Sam Mason, hundreds of young musicians across the three year offer have had the opportunity to play and learn alongside professional players and develop alongside their peers. We believe this journey has nurtured young ambitions and offered inspiration to many students who might not otherwise have had the opportunity – and where better to conclude, than the Royal Albert Hall.

We’d like to thank everyone from the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and each of the schools who have supported us. See you on the 5th November!
