Lesson 1

Introduction to the recorder and associated notation. This first lesson establishes good technique, posture and preparation for playing a piece with accompaniment. A performance of the first piece takes place near the end.

Lesson 2

This lesson introduces minims, semibreves and new note A. These are incorporated into the rehearsal and performance of a new piece – ‘Thinking.’ Work from the first lesson is also reviewed and the lesson finishes with a performance of ‘Glory B!’

Lesson 3

This lesson consolidates the use of notes B and A and uses them in tunes involving crotchets and minims. The lesson involves ‘call and response’ together with the elementary use of notation.

Lesson 4

Lesson 4 consolidates use of the notes B and A. There is a review of ‘Wet and Windy’ and an introduction to ‘How about This?’ The latter is presented in slow and fast performance versions and note G is introduced towards the end of the lesson. Dynamics are now present.

Lesson 5

Lesson 5 presents new note G in context with earlier notes learnt and uses all 3 in 2 new tunes. ‘Musical geography’ is encountered in one piece with repeated sections. Call and response together with backing tracks are used throughout.

Lesson 6

Lesson 6 completes ‘Skat Cat Swing’,  a tune started in Lesson 5. This final lesson reviews many tunes encountered across the 6 lessons and finally presents them in a performance sequence.
