Violin First Access
Lesson 1 – An introduction to the violin, how to hold it and learning to play on the G and D strings
Lesson 2 – An introduction to the A and E strings. Learning to play three pieces including crotchets and minims.
Lesson 3 – How to hold and use the bow.
Lesson 4 – This lesson is primarily concerned with detailed learning in the use of the bow together with a new piece in preparation for Lesson 5.
Lesson 5 – This lesson introduces bow retakes through 3 new tunes. The 3-beat dotted minim is also a focus. The performances of all 3 pieces can be located via the annotated timeline in this video.
Lesson 6 – After a warm-up performance of ‘In Flight’ this lesson deals with the use of the 1st finger on the ‘A’ string. The lesson includes several new tunes and concludes with a performance of ‘Fast Lane’.
Lesson 7 – This lesson mainly concerns use of the first finger, continued from Lesson 6. It also introduces the concept of ‘parallel fingers’ and incorporates this in a first look at a new piece called ‘Here it Comes.’
Lesson 8 – This lesson reviews and extends the use of the 1st finger through 2 tunes – ‘Here it Comes’ and ‘Rowing Boat’. The final part of the lesson introduces the 2nd finger on 2 strings and concludes with a full, bowed, performance of ‘Here it Comes’.
Lesson 9 – This lesson continues the use of two fingers across all strings. Performance pieces are ‘Off to Paris’ and ‘Mary had a Little Lamb’. The lesson also includes call and response exercises using the new notes.
Lesson 10 – This video features a final performance of many recent tunes as well as a demonstration performance from Jane. Instead of backing tracks the performances are given with piano accompaniment.
