Take Note

On the 17th – 19th February, a group of passionate young musicians aged 13-18 took part in a week of activities to inspire a career in the music industry. In partnership with Generator, CMC and Lighthouse, SoundStorm presented ‘Take Note,’ with a mix of interactive workshops and special guest speakers.

The week began with a collaborative song-writing session hosted by Nathan Thomas, an Ivor Novello nominated Songwriter and former producer for Kiss FM. The young people drew lyrical inspiration from a creative exercise that involved picking 2 unrelated words from a hat and building a theme around them.

In the afternoon we were joined by Sian Evans, formerly singer and lyricist of the band Kosheen, who hosted a song writing masterclass.

Day 2, it was all about Production and Music Tech;  work began on refining the songs, with the introduction of harmonies and dividing up the instrumental roles. They recorded each part separately and were introduced to some simple production and mastering techniques. International DJ, music producer/remixer & record label founder Simon Skolfield led the day and gave an inspiring insight into his experiences as both band member and producer.

The third and final day was a focus on Live Performance. We had special guests Rosanna Dean, Head of Operations at local festival, End of the Road and Jim Harding from the band New Desert Blues visit to talk about their experiences as promoter and performer respectively, both offering some sterling advice on how to approach live performance and developing local fan bases and a few ‘do’s and don’ts’ on working with agents, managers and how important rehearsals are.

The sessions concluded with a series of incredible performances by the young people, including a set of original songs written by some of the individuals alongside the group composition, supported by friends and family members. A truly collaborative success! Thanks to Bob Allen and Generator and all of the special guests
