Aspiration through Inspiration

October 13, 2020

Curated in partnership with Poole Society for Young Musicians and Broadstone Music Series we are delighted to introduce Aspiration through Inspiration, a series of professional masterclasses led by a handpicked selection of distinguished guests.

Since lockdown many students have struggled to sustain their practice through no fault of their own – with no access to ensembles, live events or performance opportunities, progression and attainment for many has become a very solitary pursuit. Maintaining motivation can be a challenge for many at the best of times, but even more so during the worst.

We are therefore thrilled to announce the launch of this brand new series of masterclasses aimed at restoring hope in the area through expertise and inspiration, offering students access to some of the UK’s premier musicians. Each event has been developed in collaboration with the guest musician, giving due consideration to the health and wellbeing of the region’s students and a shared desire to rekindle their ambition and to support their aspirations. We launch during October half term with two very special guests…

Catherine Martin
Baroque to Beethoven

The series launches with solo masterclasses and an inspirational day for violinists looking to gain expertise in historical performance from distinguished violinist Catherine Martin, leader of the Gabrieli Consort. The day includes a unique opportunity to hear and try out instruments and bows dating back to the 1600s ranging, from very early baroque to late classical.

Wed 28th October: 10 – 3.30pm
Merley House, BH21 3AA
£20 per student (including one to one masterclass)

Grade 7+ (Accompanist provided)

Born and raised up in Broadstone, Catherine began playing the violin at the age of 4. Her post-school studies led to a degree in music at Oxford and the Advanced Solo Studies postgraduate course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she first became interested in historical performance. Catherine now leads the Gabrieli Consort and Players, which specialises in music between 1600 and 1850.

In 2012 Catherine was invited by Kirill Karabits and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra to coach the players on baroque and classical repertoire. She also runs regular weekend workshops and concert performances with amateur baroque orchestras and modern chamber orchestras who wish to know more about the field of historical performance.

Catherine has also recently taught masterclasses at Hong Kong Baptist University and the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo, and she teaches historical violin and viola d’amore at the Royal College of Music in London.

Joely Koos
Cellobration

The second in our series is a day of solo masterclasses for cellists offering ‘inspiration through a performing adventure’ including improvisation and a fair amount of fun, all led by distinguished cellist Joely Koos and supported by local cellist, Claire Jones.

Friday 30th October: 10 – 3.30pm
Merley House, BH21 3AA

Grades 1 – 8+: £20 (10 Yrs +) including one to one masterclass
(Accompanist provided)

Like Charlie, Joely dreamt of owning a chocolate factory as a child but realised that her true love was the cello at the age of 9. Having musical parents was a bit like being in the circus and inevitably she was drawn into the family business! Joely now pursues a varied musical career as a chamber musician, soloist and orchestral principal.

Performing as Principal with both the English Symphony Orchestra the City of London Sinfonia she also records and won a Grammy for backing Amy Winehouse on “Rehab”. For the last twenty years, Joely has enjoyed being Professor of Cello at Trinity Laban Conservatoire. She is a co-founder and tutor of “Cello Dynamo” – a residential course for young cellists – and is regularly invited to give masterclasses at the London Cello Society.

Most recently Joely has just taken up a post of cello teacher at Eton College. For relaxation she likes to play her cello and sing at the same time – it feels a bit like juggling. But her favourite moments are when she can share music-making with her husband and two children….. the family business is going strong!
