Dorset Youth Symphony Orchestra (DYSO)

DYSO formed over 50 years ago and is an intermediate level symphony orchestra led by orchestral specialists and Dorset Music Service (DMS) team members Johnathan Randall and Dianne Ely.  The group offers high-quality orchestra coaching and the opportunity to make friends and to play alongside likeminded young musicians. 

Standard: Grade 3 or equivalent on the following:  violin, viola, cello, double bass, trumpet, cornet, French horn, trombone, tuba, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and orchestral percussion. Please note that the final session, Dec 12th has been cancelled. 

Dates: 21^st Nov, 23^rd Jan 2022, 13^th Feb, 20^th Mar, 3^rd April, 15^th May, 19^th June, 10^th July
Times: 10 – 1pm

Dorset Youth Jazz Orchestra (DYJO)

DYJO is an intermediate to advanced youth jazz orchestra led by renowned local jazz musician Terry Quinney. The group has previously enjoyed a busy gigging calendar with many performances at local music festivals and events.

Grade: Aimed at musicians of Grade 4 and above, , comprising the big band instrument mix including: trumpet, trombone, saxophone, electric guitar, bass guitar, keyboard, drum kit, double bass and voice. Please note the final session of the year, Dec 12th, has been cancelled.

Dorset Senior Brass Ensemble

Formed in 2018 by John Randall, the Dorset Senior Brass Ensemble has enjoyed a rapid rise to success. Playing all styles of music in venues/festivals across the county (inc. the Lighthouse!). The ensemble had an excellent review from the recent Music for Youth online festival, which they have participated in for the past two years. The repertoire is partly decided by the ensemble (all suggestions taken seriously), and new members are always welcome.

Grade: All brass instruments – Grade 5 +
Repertoire: Renaissance to current (with a knowing nod towards 80’s pop). Please note the Dec 12th session has been cancelled.
