Compose 2018/19

Learn how to transform ideas into music. A three-day masterclass with contemporary composers for young musicians.

For Year 9 – 11 students

Compose is a programme for ambitious music-makers. Whether you’re an aspiring singer-songwriter or would-be classical composer, a jazz enthusiast, or simply interested in understanding more about the writing process – Compose is YOUR chance to take your composition to the next level.

Join us for three composition masterclasses where you can develop, workshop and experiment in creating new music alongside other young composers. You’ll be mentored throughout the process by two acclaimed contemporary composers – John K Miles and Chris Woods.

  • John K. Miles is a multi-instrumentalist and composer with credentials spanning TV, film, world-music and partnerships with organisations including Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, English National Opera, and City of London Sinfonia
  • Chris Woods is a highly-acclaimed guitarist, composer, educator and author (Percussive Acoustic Guitar). His distinctive style of percussive guitar playing has sold thousands of albums world-wide and recently earned him the ‘Belfast Guitar Festival Award’ (2018).

John and Chris will support you in developing your own distinctive style of composition, and guide you through how to bring your ideas and stories to life through music.

The project will finish with a casual sharing of some pieces, accompanied by professional musicians, at Absolute Music.

Participants will be expected to attend all three masterclasses. No prior composition experience necessary although we would welcome anyone to bring along a piece they’ve started working on.

We’re looking for young people who are currently studying music at GCSE/BTEC or equivalent. You should be 14-16 years old (Year 9 and above) and be attending a school in Bournemouth or Poole.

All applications will be reviewed by our panel and participants will be invited to join based on their application. Remember, we’re not necessarily looking for established composers (although we’d love to see examples of any work) but for young people who can demonstrate a motivation to develop their composition skills and a passion for making music. Vocalists and instrumentalists welcome. Sight-reading not necessary.

All participants must be available for all three masterclasses on 10th November, 24th November and 12th January.

Please ask you parent or guardian to fill out the necessary sections of this form.
